I upgraded to WinXp on my old Compaq Deskpro 4000 which was 98. My ram is also upgraded to 512 but my processor is still an old Intel Pentium 233 MHz. I need 300 MHz to upgrade my dial up ISP to Verizon highspeed. Can anyone tell me which is the best processor to buy to upgrade? I know I'm using an obsolete model but I'm sure there's something still on the market. Thanx!

Get an AMD K6-2/333 processor. Check ebay.

ya know, come to think AT&T Yahoo gave me the 300 Mhz processor deal when I used the CD to install DSL. Turns out I did not have to install the CD on my 200 Mhz Pentium system. I hooked up the modem to my ethernet port, changed internet explorer to "never dial a connection" and went to 192.168.0.1 and got the modem page. Then I called AT&T (SBC at the time) and they told me how to access a webpage where I could create my account. Once the account was created I could surf the web on DSL using my 200 Mhz processor. I now have a newer computer but still use my old computer which is connected to my new router.

You can't just throw any old CPU into your Compaq without 1st checking what is supported by your motherboard. The socket-7 Pentium 233MHz runs at 2.8v...most K6-2's run at 2.2v-2.4v. If you attempt to run a K6-2 at 2.8v, you'll fry it.
However, if your board supports voltage AND multiplier adjustments (possibly thru jumpers on the board), you *should* be able to run a K6-2/400MHz CPU by setting the multiplier to 2x. The K6-2 interprets the 2x setting as 6x, so the CPU would run at 6 x 66.66MHz...in other words, 400MHz.
EDIT: unless your CPU is a slot-1 Pentium 2 & not a socket-7 Pentium 1? Then you will have no choice but to get another P2.

The 300mhz deal is bull. I used a 200mhz pentium pro as an ICS server with Verizons FIOS service. Just tell them you will install the software yourself if the tech gives you any excuses.
Is your system a PII 233? or a 233MMX PI? There are both PI and PII deskpro 4000's

"It says - Intel Pentium MMX Processor
233 MHz"Yes, but is it a Pentium I or Pentium II?
You don't know your own system specs? Try right clicking on "my computer", then click "properties"...what CPU is listed under "Computer:"?

I did just that and wrote down exactly what it says above under General - Computer. I'm guessing because the copyright year on the front of the intel pentium I have says '92'93 it's Pentium 1.

I made a mistake. It's not copyrighted '92'93. I just removed it to write down specifically what it says on the processor: (it's a Socket 7)
front:
intel pentium
w/MMX techback:
FV80503233
SL27S/2.8V
MALAY
L8062355-1057
M C '92 '95It says nothing about it being pentium I or pentium II. I even ran Everest and it said the exact same thing not mentioning anything about P I or P II.

FINALLY!!! After punching in number after number on Compaq.com I FOUND MY MODEL. It's a Deskpro 4000 5233MMX (not 4000N or 4000S 5233MMX which were the other two model) Hopefully this will help determine if I can change the processor or not or at least change the settings for the AMD K6-2 333 if I can use it. Thanx! I appreciate the help.
