Recently, my mouse pointer is behaving rather abnormally. When I sometimes move the mouse, the pointer starts moving all over the screen and clicking (all this without a single click in the mouse). Could it be a virus (strange though, I have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed and Net Security 2003 and they always eliminate the virus when they appear - and theyīre updated frequently) or a hardware problem (in the Control Panel part of the mouse it says itīs working fine) ? Could someone help me ? I fear that it will end up wipping out some folders and I donīt want it to happen. Thank you.

that problem is usually the virus.
make sure the virus is quarantined, then remove the mouse drivers, reboot and let windows reinstall

Not a typicall behaviour of a virus to cuase that kind of effects. Viruses like to HIDE rather than announce thier exsistance so moving and fooling with your pointer would be kind or pretty OBVIOUS announcement of it's presence.
I'd suggest you re-install your drivers and or try different mouse. (don't forget to un-install previous drivers though).
On some older mice there is also a little switch on the bottom (where the ball is). Moving this switch may cause pretty much same effect and make mouse stick to corners, jump about the screen and click on things whenever you try to move it.

The virus was the W32W32.Magistr.24876@mm virus.
If the computer has been infected for two months, then, on odd days, the desktop icons are repositioned when the mouse pointer approaches, giving the impression that the icons are "running away" from the mouse:
Here's the link with more info on it which also has a picture of the running icons.
