The Mother of all Write Protections

June 17, 2009 at 18:34:55
Specs: Windows XP
a power outage "semi fried" both hard drives on our computer. i say semi fried because the computer would not recognize them when attached to the internal IDE cable, but would in an external hdd enclosure with a usb 2.0 connection. however, the "my documents" folder on my wife's side will not open due to a write protection. i have tried the following-

1) went to DOS and ran the attrib function on the folder to remove the read only attributes, among others, and got an "access denied" message

2) rebooted in safe mode and tried to take ownership of the folder in the security tab, but got a message saying that i did not have permission to (and i was logged in as the administrator).

basically, any time i try to touch the folder, i get some sort of access denied message. any guesses?

thanks,
matt

you MAY need to take ownership of the file/folders. Look at the link below to learn how.

It sounds like there is nothing wrong with your hard drives. May be something wrong with your motherboard disk controllers, cables, or BIOS settings.
