I keep reading about the problems with Norton's 2002 AV program that everybody thought would be so good. Not quite. Just as XP's Defragmenter blows away Norton's SpeedDisk, there is another AV program that blows away Norton's AV program.
Nobody has mentioned THE BEST anti-virus program available according to PC World and TechTV (among others): Panda Software's Titanium or Platinum version Ant-Virus for XP.
Here is the PC World article titled "The Undisputed Champ"
http://www.pandasoftware.com/press/pcworld/
If you want to skip the review and go to the Panda site it is at:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/
You can actually download a Platinum or Titanium trial that works! It doesn't just "find" the virus and then you have to buy the program to clean it. It is the FULL version. My advice? Go with Titanium -- it is a super Anti-Virus program that, again, has beaten the programs we're used to buying at the stores (Norton and McAfee) hands down. Panda is one of the worlds leading security companies and their entry into AV software has been nothing short of brilliant. Don't trust me though, read the PC World review of Panda AntiVirus.
As for my comment on using XP's defrag program versus SpeedDisk, that was discussed, at length, by several people in another thread:
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/6723.html
The bottom line on that is that XP's defrag is simply Executive Software's "Diskeeper" licensed to Microsoft. It is so obviously a better defragger than SpeedDisk (which was so obviously better than the old defragger with 95,98 and ME). Read the thread above if interested.

writerranger - THANK YOU! I have been reading these av posts and wondering why nobody was mentioning panda. I have run it for several months and when I first tried it panda found a virus that Norton went right past. I also read your post about the XP defrag. It was about time for me to run my trusty speedisk again anyway so I tried the XP utility. Sad to say because I have used speedisk for years, but you are right. It really is fast and left me with zero fragmented files. Very nice. Thanks for the tip.

I'll probably try panda after my subscription to nav runs out, I knew that mcafee was a slower then molasses virus scanner.
and it would pass over virus that nav would find.
speed disk hasn't been that good since the
one for 95.when windows went to fat32 speed disk for it is just as slow as defrag. or slower.

I would also like to put in my vote for Panda Anti-Virus. I had never heard about Panda until I purchased a new laptop a little over a year ago and it came with the trial version. I now use Titantium on win2000 with no problems what so ever.

i've been using Panda since about 2 years from now..i've tried about 10 A-v before.. and it's the best Av i never seen.. really lighter than northon on memory and all..
works great anf fuc**n reliable!try also Vet.. my second choice over all brand.. after panda!
www.vet.com.au

i almost forgot..
during the 2 years.. i tested it hard..
i found out that panda will find about 100% more trojan virus than Northon and McAffee combined.. some unpopular trojan.. not just netbus and backorifice..don't hesitate !!! go get it now... i mean... NOW!!!!! security depend on it
