Hello.

I make a practice of frequently emptying out my Temp Folder, the one that's located in:
C:\Documents and Settings.....Local Settings\Temp.

In order to access the Temp Folder, you have to turn on the feature of "View Hidden Files". Now I'm not exactly sure how long I've noticed this - maybe a month or two - but there are two files in there that I can't delete because when I try, I get that message that pops up saying that that file is being used by another program. Here are the names of those two files:

Perflib_Perfdata_338
Perflib_Perfdata_b74

I thought perhaps that they were some type of virus or spyware, but they check out as "clean" when I scan them both with my latest updated Antivirus and Spyware detector programs.

So, I plug the two names into a search engine, and here's a quote I found:

"The Perflib subkey stores configuration data for the Windows Performance Library, which collects and organizes data for performance tools, such as System Monitor."

But then I also came across this quote: "The value of this entry determines which tests Perflib runs on trusted and non-trusted performance counter DLLs."

When I see the words "non-trusted", it tends to raise an eyebrow; I get concerned. Could this in-fact be some sort of spyware collecting data? Anyone heard of this file? How come I've only seen it pop up in the last month or two in my Temp Folder? Is it something new that was part of a Windows Security Update?

I'd appreciate and help, tips, or detailed info.

Thanks,
Pez

I've never heard of that before, but if you really really want to delete them, try downloading MoveOnBoot (google it), which deletes them next time your restart. But you may want to find out what they are first. Hope that helps.

No time for love, Dr. Jones!

Pez,

This fileis an operating system file used for your system monitor utility. I recommend that you just leave it alone and forget it. They can't be deleted except by an automated logon script.
