Temp files in DOS

Specs: Windows XP
I am looking for a step-by-step from the opening desk page on how to remove the temp files from DOS. I had some notes from a conversation with Norton person but must have copies something wrong. I had - start - run - CMD - rd %temp% /s that does not work. please help me in laymans instruction

... start run (type) cmd [press ENTER]

... ( in the command prompt black box )

(type) RD %temp% /s [ENTER]

... will recursively
Remove Directories and contents there-in which are not being used by windows

... all contents of that "temp" folder are deleted apart from any files being used!
