Subject: TCP/IP ProblemOS: Windows XPCPU/Ram: Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz 2Model/Manufacturer: Dell Dimension 8250 |
Comment: Hi, I have a home network which has one desktop connected by ethernet (my computer) then a couple other computers connected wirelessly. A couple weeks ago my computer's hard drive failed and I had to replace it. When I finally did that and reinstalled Windows and everything I found that my internet was not working. I had my computer connected directly through the modem when trying to first get it to connect and I cant. Whenever I go to the Network Connections and try to repair the connection, I get and error which says "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot Proceed." In the device manager I have a yellow flag next to the ethernet controller and I have tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling it but the wizard cant find the files to install it. Somebody please help and Im not too smart with computers so take it easy on me if it is a simple problem. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)Instead of uninstalling try updating the driver with the correct one. You should be able to obtain that driver from the Dell site. Also, sometimes all that is required is to toggle the line in the properties box for the network from "disable this device" to "enable this device". You did connect the cable to the network port? Should get a green light next to the port.

Reply: (edit)it is connected and i can see the light... all of my other computers work when i hook the router back up so it is not the internet. When i searched on dell.com i couldnt find anything that had to do with "ethernet controllers." when i click update it searches but then asks to search the internet and since it isnt working, i cant update.

Reply: (edit)mmm - go to Dell.com Then in the search box (top right) under products type: Dimension 8250 and click on the arrow (to the right). You will get a list of support items that includes one for the network card installation (drivers etc. and trouble-shooting). It was #9 on my search... That "ought" to help you resolve it all? Presumably you do have the Dell provided CDs. If you do NOT have the CD (presumably Dell would replace it if asked?) then you can also obtain the drivers viz: (presuming you go to the USA site) Go to Dell.com; click on Support (top of display); click on Drivers & Downloads; scroll down to Network (near bottom of list); and expand the list... Drivers etc. can be found there... - and the Intel Pro (onboard network adapter?) drivers are at the bottom...

Reply: (edit)Incidentally, if you enter the tag number for your Dimension in the appropriate box on the support page, you will usually get taken to all the info, downloads etc and other support items for your PC.

Reply: (edit)Thanks, that fixed the yellow flag on the ethernet controller, but I still cannot connect to the internet. When I open network connections there is one thing under it, "1394 Connection." I am connect by cable without a password so it will not let me create another connection. When I click repair the same message as before comes up. When I look at the status this is the info: Status: Connected Speed: 400.0 Mbps Activity: Packets Sent-0 Packets Received-0 Then the support tab just says <unavailable> next to each category. When i try to "ipconfig" it in the command prompt it just says "Windows IP Configuration" When i try to "ping 207.0.0.1" it says: Destination host unreachable. " " " " " " Ping statistics for 207.0.0.1 Packets: Sent=4, Received=0, Lost= 4 This problem is really killing me and i do not know what to do.

Reply: (edit)1394 connection is your firewire port. Is your cable modem connected to the computer by a firewire connection. I suggest you run the network wizard. Find that in Control panel.

Reply: (edit)I cant do anything. The wizard will not let me create a new connection. I click "create a new connection" then click "connect to internet" then "set up my connection manually" then "connct using a broadband connection that is always on." It then says "Your broadband connection should already be configured and ready to use." Then the wizard ends. I am using comcast cable internet. Internet works for all other computers but i dont know why i cant get this one set up again. It was working before the hard drive failed. I may have missed a step somewhere when reinstalling the stuff to my new hard drive but I am clueless.

Reply: (edit)it didnt change anything. I dont know if this will help but there isnt an icon at the bottom of the screen which says if the computer is connected or not. And when i remove the ethernet cable from the computer it does not say that the cable was removed.

Reply: (edit)The card may not be properly installed (physically into its slot). power off; remove mains to the system entirely - as in remove mains plug/cable... Open case and remove the card; clean its contacts with an eraser or cotton cloth; re-install card - and ensure it is properly seated in its slot - at both ends of the card. Restore power and see what happens... If the card is deleted - and it ought to be by XP as it boots thru' to desktop... then proceed to install its drivers?

Reply: (edit)i dont know which card you are talking about, but why would this problem occur. My internet was working before on the computer. Can somebody take me through the process of reinstalling everything on a computer and reconnecting it to a network after a memmory loss. Just take me through the steps that you would do after replacing a hard drive. How would you reinstall all the programs and stuff like that. I just want to make sure that i did not miss and simple step when reinstalling my basic programs. I have a linksys router and my computer is connected to it by an ethernet cord. Thanks in advance.

Reply: (edit)mmm - remembering this a Dell PC; and may have an on-board/built-in network card; and noting again that you have replaced the drive... If the XP CD you have is a Dell recovery version... then go to Dell site and look for how to use it (restore the system to factory gate state). Be aware that the process will totally remove all data etc. from the drive. So if there's anything you wish to save - music/pics/files various... - copy them off to optical media first; and verify they can be read/accessed properly. Do this before you set about doing anything to the current installation. If it's standard/full version CD - post back.
