taskbar/desktop icons not appearing

When I log into my desktop, it's blank, just the wallpaper. I can only access my programs using ctrl alt delete. Help.

right-click your desktop and select 'Properties'. At the top, select 'Effects'. Make sure there is no checkmark beside 'Hide icons when viewed as a Web Page'
