Taskbar Icons Missing

OS: XP home
CPU/Ram: P3 850mhx/256 ram

Since a recent microsoft update my takbar icons disappear any time I start up the computer. I can get them back by going to control panel sound and audio devices, then click add volume icon in the taskbar. but once I restart the computer they are gone again and it is unchecked again. Does anyone know how to fix this?

oneswtmom,
Right click on the start tab and select properties.Click on the taskbar tab and then the customize tab. Under the window click on the icon you want to show up and choose to always show apply and ok out.

I have tried that and currently have all I want to always show. still have an issue.
