Task Manager won't open

I cannot open task manager. Ctr + Alt + Del does not work. Right clicking on the application bar and clicking task manager does not work. Nothing happens. Also, the find files application does not work. I don't knwo if this has anything to do with this purity scan that got on my computer. I am trying to get rid of it, but have not been successful. If I could open task manager I could end purity scan and remove it from the startup menu. Can anyone help?

I repaired windows with the installation cd. That enabled me to open task manager, however it disappears a few seconds after. The green icon on the task panel disappears a few seconds after that. Bob, i did what you suggested, but no luck. Also, I installed Norton System Works and the same thing happens to that program when I launch it. It is up for a few seconds and then it disappears, as does the incon in the task manager. Any other help would be great....
