Task manager not functioning proper

I am having trouble opening the task manager in windows XP. I have had my e-machine for about 2 years and use task manager regularly; program is invoked by hitting ctrl+alt+del. Now when I try to use it the icon appears in the task bar but the task listing does not show on the main screen. By right clicking on the icon I can choose from "always on top" or "close." How do I get back to normal function. It's driving me nuts! Any ideas appreciated.

Summary: Hi Brian... Even after rebooting (cold and hot) still nothing its as if ALT-CTRL-DEL never existed. Definately remember ALT-CTRL-DEL working bringing up task manager - nothing on my system has changed...
