t60 recovery boot disk cannot load dos

Specs: Windows XP, core duo 1.8 mhz./ 1 gig
Hi
I am trying to fix a lenovo t60 core duo 1.8mhz. for an old couple. They ran into problems and installed a copy of XP over the top of existing software. This has altered the mbr, so we cannot get to RnR. I have obtained a set of RnR disks ( 1x boot and 6x reinstall). I have fdisked and formated C:\ to fat32.The boot disk says it cannot load DOS and stops. Any help gratefully recieved.

John

Hi

Thanks for trying, were you suggested was were I got the recovery disks.
As I said everything works fine except that the DOS boot disk wont load.
It gets to the start and then says " cannot load dos press any key to retry".
In short I am just wheel spinning

... after using the mbr repair bootup iso from the link do you now see on the screen:

To Start the Product Recovery program, press F11

... the repair bootup iso should of enabled that function.

"...This message will stay on the screen for approximately 2 seconds, and it will be there every time the machine is started from a powered off state..."

... of course this all depends if the recovery partition exists returning the system to it's original factory configuration.

Hi
Thanks for all your trouble. I have followed your instructions and come dry. The partition still exists, but the RnR31 disk does nothing except repair the MBR. So it appears that the restore back-up has been deleted. If I could boot from the recovery disks I could reinstall everything, but it does not look like it is going to happen. The problem as I see it is DOS can only handle 2gig., but the back-up even if I could get it to boot, is 4.3gig.
If you have any further suggestions please let me know, as I am now getting to the hair pulling stage and I dont have too much of the thatch left.

... I'm not sure if you laptop has floppy drive(?) suggesting you bootup with win98 floppy or what ever you used last time to fdisk use option 4
(you can download bootup(only tools) win98se iso here)

4. Display partition information

... just to make sure that the recovery partition has nothing in it percentage wise!

... if there is something perhaps one could boot to that partition by setting it active.

2. Set active partition

... and evoke the recovery if it exists, been done before but I hav'nt with an ibm.

... please post back results then perhaps we'll tackle the cd's problem!
