There is probably a system.ini entry that needs to be removed.

Download 'Hijack This!'. Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.

HijackThis!

I have this problem too. Every startup i have a msg saying it cannot find "system32.exe".

i ran the hijack program and found something like this:

F0 - system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe

do you need more info or is this enough to fix the prob?

Ok i got it fix.

Here is the solution:

What worked for me was I went into my regedit>Hkey_local_Machine/software/microsoft/windows nt/current version/winlogon. In the right box go to shell it should read Explorer exe windows\system32\system32.exe Right click on shell open modify and delete windows\system32\system32.exe Leave Explorer Exe. and reboot.

This fixed my problem.

Timr (or someone else) I need help.
I had the same problem, so I did what you said. It worked, the poo up is gone, but my desktop is also gone. Now when I start the computer, it open a window with the folders in my C drive. It does not show me my desktop (start menu, taskbar, etc) as it used to. Is this related to deleting windows\system32\system32.exe? Or I did something else wrong. Please help!!! Jota

Go back to the registry key in question, and Type Explorer.exe, then reboot. You will get your desktop back.
