system32 missing or corrupt

the following message appears when pc turned on windows\system32\config\system it then says about putting the original disc in to repair problem is i dont have the original disc as i brought comp second hand, not sure what to do to put a different copy of windows on

Dude, I had the same problem. You can try getting a disk.
What I had to do was erase Windows and re-install on a clean partition on the hard drive. I tried alot of diffrent fixes. None worked. Even the fix above in another reply. Didn't work.
After you get a disk with a reg. code load a second install of windows. boot your computer using this install. This will allow you to back-up all your data and stuff to disks before your clean install.
When that is done, reload WIndows XP on a clean partition on your harddrive.
