I've tried all the suggestions to stop the system32 folder from opening. Nothing in them applies. I don't have any "null" or "void" registries that I can tell, the download on "kelly's" says "item not found, cannot fix" and the alternative suggestion by Microsoft about making sure only three lines related to systray remain in the one registry doesn't work because there is no registry by that name anywere in my registry (no systray.exe at all). Might this last bit actually be the culprit? This began this week and I haven't been in regedit for months and have done nothing else to my OS that I am aware of.

If you look in the MSCONFIG file, is that folder listed on the Startup tab?
