Hi All,
Two of the computers on our network won't detect USB drive. Actually what happens is that it recognises that there is a USB device attached and a little icon appears in the system tray. It also allows to safely remove the device. But the drive does not appear among other drives when we open "MY COMPUTER". We can not see it, open it or see the contents within the USB drive. We can see network drives, local drive C: and the CDRom. Can anyone help

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.

Aki,,,

If the computer’s USB port cannot supply enough power to the drive it normally does not automatically appear in “My Computer” the first thing to try

Right click on “My Computer” and choose “Manage” from the drop-down list. A Window called “Computer Management” will pop up
Click on the “Disk Management”. All connected disk drives will be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the window. Carefully locate your new external drive, right click on it to initialize your drive.

Thanks FJB,
Actually I did what you recommended and in the process found out that there is a clash of the drive letters. Drive E: is a network drive and disk management shows the USB mounted as E: as well. When I tried to open USB from the disk managment menu, it opened up the network drive E:

Should I change the drive letter for the USB drive. Would it cause any problems. Any suggestions on what scheme should be adopted as far as issuing new dirve letters is concerened.

Thank you.
