System Won't Boot, Hangs on Any Boot Option

Hewlett-packard / PAVILION 533W

Specs: Windows XP Home Edition, Celeron 2.00 GHz/256 MB [PC2100]

I get the following error message:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

    Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

Any choice cause the system to hang. Specifically, when trying safe mode, it hangs on agp440.sys.

I have tried repairing with both the HP Recovery CDs and a Windows XP Home Edition installation disc. I have tried Windows Recovery's FIXBOOT command as well.

mmmm... seems this is not an unknown event... And I dun a brief trawl (google/yahoo) using the string/search term:

XP hangs before loading Agp440.sys service

and there a more than few hits. Rather than extract/repeat them here... suggest you run a trawl using the above string?

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/foru...

is just one that offers a few suggestions...

See if you can run a system repair by using the OS's CD installer. Then see if it worked.
