In the last week or so my home computer takes up to 10 minutes to open programs. It boots up (Windows XP) with no problems, but when I click on applications, the hourglass comes on for a few seconds and disappears. Then, anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes later the application will open, and seems to perform as normal. Similarly, when I go to shutdown the computer, it takes up to 5 or 10 minutes to shut off. It usually does finally shut off, but it just takes forever. My computer should have the "horsepower" to perform these actions nearly instantly, as it did up until a few days ago. Computer had performed flawlessly for ~6 months.
Here are some of the specs of my system:
1.4 ghz processor (Athlon)
512 MB RAM
100 GB hard drive with 83 GB free
Windows XP
Have recently done a disk-defrag and disk "health" check: no problemsI suspect that maybe this problem is virus-related, though I'm not sure. Perhaps it's a registry problem? My expertise is limited, so these are hunches. When I do a scan of the computer with my virus-scan software (which is updated regularly) it finds nothing. However, during a recent scan a couple days ago, it returned a note that 4 viruses were found (3 backdoor-type viruses, and 1 trojan-type virus, identified as the following: BKDR_LITMUS.C, TROJ_DIALER.A, and BKDR_SUB7.MUIE) in a directory called C:\System Volume Information. (For instance: one filepath reads as this: c:\System Volume Information\_restore04CAC549-B8F7-4807-9931-540E02397EA\RP4\A0000400.exe, and the executable file is identified as the BKDR_LITMUS.C virus).
I cannot find this directory anywhere using Windows Explorer (I have a printout of this complete directory path and virus description). However, subsequent virus scans don't seem to detect any viruses. I suspect they are still lurking in this hidden directory, and I want to wipe them out.
I'm at a loss. I have nearly all of the original installation disks of the programs that I need, so I suppose as a last resort I could "rebuild" but I'd hate to do that if another solution is possible.
How should I a) get rid of the viruses in the hidden System Volume Information directory, and b) do you think this is what is causing my slow performance, or could that be other issues related to registry, etc.?
Any help appreciated,
thanks

hi im not sure about your problem but if u have a virus in your system restore points u can remove them by going to control panel/click on free up disk space/choose more options and from there u can delete your restore points

sean

its me again here is a site u might find usefull if u already dont know about.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/bye. sean

To see the hidden System Volume Information directory:
winExplorer/tools/folder options/view/uncheck hide protected operating system files/apply

This may not have anything to do with your problem, but might be worth a look.
There may be a program hanging on startup - slowing the system so much it almost stops.
I have experienced problems with BITS doing this on more than one machine, possibly starting after a Microsoft Update.
To disable this (doesn't seem to do much)
Start/Run/Services.msc
Right-Click on Background Intelligent Transfer System and select properties. Then either Stop this service and set to Manual, or just Disable it.
Restart and see if it helps.
If not you can take a good look over the Event Viewer list for errors. (Control Panel/Administrative Tools)
Good Luck

could be right there nic cos i had a problem with a slow start up with the task bar locking up 4 ages but then i unchecked the background intelligent box and it boots up fast now
