Explorer crashed on our system running XP Pro. I am trying to bring it back up, but I need to unhide the System Volume Information folder to get the information to try and do a restore. Is there a way to get to the Tools Menu to change the folder properties without using Explorer?

System Volume Information folder should be accessed only by Windows XP System Restore utility. How are you trying to make it work using Windows Explorer?

Basically what happended was my husband uninstalled SP2. We were then getting the following error message when he turned the computer on:

Explorer.exe
The procedure entry point SHCreate Thread Ref could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll

We were told we could use the Windows XP Home disk we have to reinstall the files, but nothing I tried worked. So I started to do a recovery from digitalwebcast.com - all was going well until it got to the part about unhidding the System Volume Information folder. I need to get in there to copy some files out of the Snapshot folder into a temporary folder I created to try and bring the system back. I have no start bar or anything. I can only do limited things through the task manager. Right now the computer is an oversized paperweight :o(

Just need to know if there is a command I can use as a New Task in the Task Manager to open up the Tools Menu for Folder options.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Amy

All you had to do to get rid of sp2 was do a restore to a time before you installed it. It creates a check point in the restore before it starts the install. You might be able to still do that. Couldn't hurt to try it.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

I've tried just about everything mentioned with no luck. I have an original Windows XP Home editition CD but no activation key or I would just install home over pro.

I can't even get to any restore points to try a restore - I can't even access my start bar, its just a blank screen with no icons. I need to ctrl/shift/esc to get the task manager.

If you have the key for pro you can borrow a XP pro cd and run a system repair.

Just a thought, If your cd key is legal you may get a computer shop to run it for you from their disk. Just tell them you lost it.

Its legal, just really didn't want to go that route if I didn't have to. I might have to call or email mircosoft directly for help to see if there is any way out of this mess - lol.

Thank you

I recall a post some time ago that the poster called MS and was told he had to buy a new disk, retail price. Doesn't hurt to try. Please let us know what happens for future reference. Where are you located?

Does my computer even need the System Volume Information folder to run properly? I don't really need to restore anything, nothing really that important on my computer. Seems to have more problems than it's worth, so is there any downside to just deleting all the subfolders or the main folder?
