I have had some system tray icons disappear and I can't figure out how to get them back into the system tray. When I review my start-up listings, the program is selected to run and is running, but the icon that used to be in the system tray has simply disappeared. It was an icon related to a software program and had nothing to do with hardware. How do I get it back? Thanks

Did you try re-booting? Also, sniff around in the tools or options of the software that's missing and see if there is an option "show icon in system tray". If you see this program running in the Processes tab of Task Manager, kill the process and re boot. That's all I can come up with. And last but not least, run adaware or SpyBot. They will clean out your spyware.Good Luck

DGD, Right click your Start button, choose Properties and under the Taskbar tab click the Customize button and under the Current Items locate those icons and under the Behavior column double click on those and choose "Allways Show". click Apply/OK.

Thanks for the input. The icon I want to bring up is listed under "past items" and not under current items. How do I get the icon considered as a current item? It doesn't look like one can drag and drop these icons in the window. Thanks again for your help.

DGD, I don't know which Program's icon you want to appear but open that program and check under "Options,Settings, etc" where you may find a setting to show the icon on the SystemTray.

DGD,

The 'past items' section you're talking about merely displays a list of icons that at some time in the past have appeared on your taskbar... even if the program doesn't exist anymore. You won't find anything there to help you.

As Tufenuf stated, it sounds like the program itself is not loading the icon and there is almost always a setting in that program's preferences menu to 'show icon in taskbar' or something similar.

XP's taskbar is kinda buggy. I've had icons disappear and reappear for no apparent reason. Kelly's Corner has the utility that Per was speaking of, and you might give that a try:
