Comment:

I have had no problems of this nature untill recently.

I have just installed O&O Defrag 8. Not long after installing it I obviously defragged my drive. I opted for "Boot time defragmentation" and also had it reset and do an offline defrag. During the offline defrag my PC froze so I had to reset it. Upon startup I noticed that some of my System Tray Icons were gone.

I have checked to see if the services accociated with these icon were still booting on startup and they are. It is just a problem with the icons. The wierd thing is, they come and go. One time I boot my PC there will be four of them and the next 2 and then 1 or 5.

Thanks in advance for any help.

ReInstalling WindowsXP
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm
If you need to reinstall WindowsXP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
1. Start WindowsXP
2. Go to the location of your source files
3. Run WINNT32 /unattend
For example, D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste this command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 on your drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.

ToolPunk, Right click your Taskbar, choose Properties, under the Taskbar tab click the Customize button, click (one at a time) each icon you want showing and using the drop down arrow button choose Allways show, click OK/Apply/OK.

I tried setting them to "Always Show" and it didn't help, same problem still occurs.

I don't get it.

I've logged a similar problem, but I find that if I log out and back on, the taskbar icons appear correctly. I also find that some of the icons in the taskbar properties list are against the wrong tasks. I'd be interested to know if this is true of your problem too, though it won't help to solve it.

ToolPunk, Go to the link below and under the letter "N" scroll down to "Notification Area - Icons Disappearing" where you'll find several possible fixes. Note that the Notification Area is Windows XP's name for the former System Tray.
