Comment:
For some reason, my system tray icons don't update anymore. For instance, if a program normally changes icons, it doesn't anymore. New icons can still be added/removed from the system tray, but icon images don't change anymore.
What could be the problem? Could it be somewhere in the registry that I have to look?
I am not sure as to what exactly you are talking about. If you mean that an icon on the system tray will be like blacked out until an update is downloaded then it will change colors. If this is what you mean then more than likely the update program has been damaged or you have used a tweak program and it has changed the registry settings for them. I don't use "tray" icons very much as my are set to always hide. But I con't think that I have ever seen them change shapes per sey after a download. Just seen them change colors. To fix the problem...uninstall the program and reinstall it.

What I mean, is that system tray icons sometimes change depending on their status. For instance, for my FTP program, it changes colors when it's transferring and changes again when it's idle. Same with DUMeter. But now, they don't anymore. They stay the same, and they never change colors or icons.
Gary, This is just a WAG but try starting your computer in SAFE mode then restart it in Normal mode. Doing this will rebuild the Iconcache.db file which may have become corrupted and possibly may be causing the problem. Let us know if it helps or not as there's another possible fix.
Please let me know the other fix. This one didn't seem to work.
On a side note, after going into Safe Mode, the system tray icons looked like they were fixed. But in normal mode, the system tray icons (for some programs) don't show, just like it was before.
Gary, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 166 right side column and download the "Add Icon Cache Size to Folder Options/View" which is a .reg file. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. This will give you 4 options for the Icon Cache Size in your Folder Options under the View tab. Choose the 4096 option then reboot your computer. You can access Folder Options in your Control Panel or in Windows Explorer/Tools. Hopefully it may correct your problem.
Gary, Right click an empty area of your Taskbar, choose Properties, click the Customize button then single click each Current Item and use the drop-down arrow button and choose Always show, click OK/Apply/OK. If that doesn't correct the problem I'm out of ideas.
