Look at this article even though it says Windows 2000

If this doesn't help, please clarify your question.

Go to Start-Run. Type in MSCONFIG. Go to far right TAB. Click on Startup. Go down and uncheck anything that you do not want to run in startup. This will eliminate most of the items that you would see in the tray. Most of the items just "hog" resources and aren't needed. I also don't use any desktop icons. Most of the time my favorite (most used) programs are there for me to choose. Keeps for a clean desktop.

You mnight also want to check into downloading the free version of Tweak UI for XP. Lots of nice features to help you clean up your Windows functions.

For the ones that you don't want to remove completely, there is a 'remote' chance that some of them will have an option to remove the systray icon.
