Hi friends.... Does anyone know where I can find the setting to wake my computer from "standby" mode?
On my previous computer, I could log-off as usual via clicking the green "start" button... then clicking the yellow "standby" button. Then later on I could shake the mouse or hit any key to "wake it up". I can't locate the setting to do this, and it's driving me nuts.
I browsed all through "power options", but I can't find it...Can somebody point me in the right direction here before I have to go on my sedatives, please?

Thanks very much ..

Oops, I should have mentioned that; my bad...
It does go into standby, but when I jiggle the mouse, it doesn't wake up. So I then hit the main power button on the tower to do a full shut-off, then I reboot and start up.
I used ti like that feature too, particularly if I was going to be away from the computer for a while. Before, I would simply jiggle that mouse, and it would come out of standby.
I think there must be a setting somewhere that I cannot find.

Additional info >>> I just did a test.. I clicked the "standby" button, and it goes into standby without problem. The little light blinks on the power button, which is normal for standby.
But... I jiggle the mouse, and it doesn't wake up.... that is what I am trying to figure out.
I mistyped a bit above.... I don't have to do a forced power on/off as I made it sound in my above post.. In standby mode, I hit the power button on the tower, and it wakes up fine....
So my problem is trying to figure out why the mouse won't wake it up..

clammer: Next time you want to go to Standby, create a shortcut for your Quick Launch bar and type in the following, and name it Standby or Hibernate:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState

(Leave a space after exe)
After the computer goes into Standby mode, move your mouse and see if it come out of Standby.

clammer: Sorry, but in creating the shortcut, leave out the (%windir%\system32\) when you type the line in. Again, sorry about that error.

Thank you gilloz. Right after dinner tonight, I will try that. Might take me some time, as I'm not sure on how to create a shortcut; but I'll google for that.
Many thanks my friend...

I'm an idiot, lol.. I knew how to make the shortcut. Not sure what I was thinking about; I maybe had it confused with something else.
Anyways, I made the shortcut and types in what you told me, but I keep on getting errors saying something to the effect "Windows cannot open this file..Windows needs to know what program created it...."
A bit beyond my expertise here, I'm ashamed to say... But I'll ask my neoghbor to help me with this if I can get him to come over.
Thanks again gilloz very much.

ncstone, I checked that out but there is no key to do that; I have just a plain ordinary Dell keyboard here. Thanks though!

Unless this is a laptop I wouldn't bother with standbye mode. It's notorious for not working properly on PC's. In fact, the very behavior you're talking about is a frequent problem with standbye. I would disable it completely and just set your monitor and hard drive to go to turn off after however long you desire. I have my monitor set to power down after 5 min's and my HDD after 1 hour. It always wakes up when I jiggle my mouse....unlike standbye...

Further to Curt's comment, the only advantage of having those Power Management features (hibernate & standby) is to conserve laptop battery life, If you use it for desktop, you gain nothing beneficial.

Why don't you try the Dell Forums if you plan to pursue this. Personally I wouldn't but www.support.dell.com and look on the left side of the screen for the forums.

Good morning.... Sorry for this late reply; just woke up..
Yes, I think you're all correct.. Probably I'll just set it to "power off" should I leave it unattended for a length of time.
I realize "standby" is mostly for laptops, and not my desktop here.
many thanks everyone; very much appreciated here. Have a great week everyone; and Happy Springtime.
