I cannot do a system restore.I do not get an error, just will not go beyond the select restore date.just sits there.I have run all the cleaners I have, but nothing helps. At first I could only access internet with Firefox but now IE is working fine.

Any dates that have related restore points will be in bold. Clicking on a date that is NOT bold text will produce nothing.

I had the same problem once. Restore points there but click on any save point doesn't engage a restore period. It just sits at the list of restore points screen and remains there due to a trojan in my case. Note that this will only do you good if a restore is selected when things were still working fine. If a trojan were present in the other system points this will do you no good. Worked like a charm for me. Clean your system first with anti-spware programs and scan with antivirus program. Then go here and follow these instrutions.

Try System Restore while you are in Windows Safe-Mode.
Using System Restore too many times can cause
more harm than good. After doing a restore
that does not fix a problem, then UNDO the
Restoration, and try another restore point, or
just do the UNDO.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302796
Troubleshooting steps for issues when you try to use the System Restore tool in Windows XPALSO, Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

Are you by any chance using Norton antivirus? If you are, you have to disable its self protection because a restore makes it think something is trying to change it.

I do not have Norton.I have run all my cleaners, started in safe mode and checked "restart the last good configuration" Didn't help. Now when I try to shut down i can only accomplish that by shutting off at the switch Won't shut down the regular way.now when it sits for awhile not in use,my screen saver never comes on and then when I try to open a folder,or anything else on my desktop,I cannot. It is all "dead".So have to restart, using the switch.

Run AntiVisus scan on your system. Back up your personal files and then boot to your WinXP CD and perform a system repair. Look at the link below for more help with that.
