Humor me, because I'm a total beginner when it comes to computers.
(Here's my really dumb question.)
I'm trying to use System Restore, and it keeps telling me to turn it on. So I go to where it tells me... (Start>Control Panel>System), and I can't find the System Restore tab.
Am I oblivious or what?

That is REALLY strange! thanks for the reply.
Try start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore and see what comes up. There should be a link on the left saying system restore settings.
If it's there, then click on that

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Thanks for the much-needed help.

But, yeah, I've tried that. It keeps popping up with this:

..So I'm in a dilemma here, because I can't turn it on without the stupid little tab.

Is this your home PC? If it is
Try tapping f8 repeatedly on bootup and go in to safe mode.
Once in safe mode try all the steps we did earlier and see if the systems restore shows up.

Goto 'Start Menu'
-->Run
type "gpedit.msc" hit enter
navigate to
--->computer configuration
--->administrative templates
--->system
--->system restore

This might allow you to turn on system restore from here. you will probably have to login as an admin to try this.

good luck
david

Well done XpUser4Real for finding the full instructions.

I hoped i was on the right lines but didn't know what service to start/disable in the group policy editor.

I wasn't willing to mess around with my own system im afraid!

Whoo..MANY thanks both of you.

I am the administrator, though, and when I run gpedit.msc, it says:

"Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name in correctly, and then try again."

In your profile for post #1 you had stated that you were running WinXP PRO.

The Group Policies Editor (gpedit.msc) is not available in WinXP Home. If you are running XP Home then you will get that error message.
I must throw this back over to XpUser4Real i'm afraid.
Possibly think about backing up all your critical data to cd/dvd or external drive until you can get system restore up and running.

regards
d.

I was checking out your problem. Some pages I found stated that spyware could be the culprit.
These are all FREE....Have you used:
Spyware Blaster
Spybot S&D (be sure to immunize)
Adaware SE
and most of all, I keep mentioning this free scan http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php
and remove all it finds. This scan seems to find quite a bit that the spyware scans miss.
See how you make out

what puzzles me is the image in response 7. That is a pop-up from XP Pro, even though her response 5 showed XP Home.
This is a bit confusing.

Try this Kellys fix:

Download 289 on the right hand side of the column and run the file.
That may bring it back...let's keep our fingers crossed!

Now if that doesn't work...I found this online with some research and the poster said it worked:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul... This tells you how to back up your registry just in case.

For WinXP Home

Click Start/Run and type REGEDIT

Locate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows NT\SystemRestore
In the right-pane, delete the value "DisableConfig".

Close Registry Editor

Close and re-open the System Restore properties page.

Note you can save the registry key first by:
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File name box, type SaveKey, and then click Save.

Is there a "DisableSR" value in the same registry key? If so, delete it as
well.

Take your time with this and Good Luck.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
