my computer seems to have crashed. i did something to my registry and i can't undo it with system restore for windows xp. even worse, the only thing i seem to be able to get into is Internet Explorer. the resolution is awful...it's like the entire computer just got cleaned out...is there anything i can do about this?

It depends what you did to the registry.

You may not have gone back far enough on your System Restores date.
Pick an earlier date to restore from.

i wish that was my problem. the system restore isn't accessible...i get a window saying that the file doesn't have an association...i'm trying to get the system restore back to hopefully push the computer back far enough to get my files back in working order

Can you boot to Safe mode - select Last Known Good Configuration?

i think i inadvertently removed something while using regcleaner...i can't even access the backups. i used regcleaner to try and remove some spyware and i may have removed most of my computer's functionality as well. i just want to know if there is anything i can do to get past that window stating that system restore can't be accessed because the file doesn't have an association. thanks

Restart Windows. Hit F8 immediaterly after the Dell BIOS screen and just before Windows begin to load. If Safe Mode doesn't work, you may have to repair reinstal Windows using Dell XP CD.

cbaldwinjr, Can you use another computer and go to the link below and download the Fixswen.inf file onto a floppy disk or a CD then transfer the floppy disk or CD to the problem computer and run the Fixswen.inf file.

"Save the fixswen.inf file to your local hard disk, right-click on the file and choose install".

"A Setup INF file to undo registry changes made by W32/Swen@MM and other threats that prevent REGEDIT, BAT, COM, EXE, PIF, REG and SCR files from running".

Fixswen Tool

It may correct the file association problem.

cbaldwinjr, Go into your C:\Programs\RegCleaner\Backups folder and locate the .reg files that you removed with RegCleaner and right click each one and choose "Merge". This should restore the registry files back so that the changes that were made by removing them will be nullified.

To try the Last Known Good Configuration. But if it doesn't work, then it sounds like the only recourse you have may be to repair reinstal Windows using Dell XP CD in order to fix the registry.

cbaldwinjr, Try double clicking those backup .reg files and see if you can restore them in that manner. If you can't I believe that the Fixsen.inf file I mentioned in my previous response very well may correct the File Association problem which you defintely have. Can't you download it with the problem computer?

hey,
try copying the back up of your registry files SYSTEM, SAM, SOFTWARE, SECURITY, DEFAULT.
Boot to the WinXP OS cd and get into recovery console. change path to c:\windows\repair. rename system.bak to system. then copy all the above mentioned files to c:\windows\system32\config.
To rename - at c:\windows\repair type
ren system.bak system
To copy - at c:\windows\repair type
copy system c:\windows\system32\config
same format for all the files.
