Got a pretty bad problem. Recently upgraded to XP Pro from 98. Everything seemed to be working fine except for Norton Systemworks 2003. So I decided to reinstall it. Somewhere along the way my computer got messed up. With Norton, the Virus protection capability now doesn't work, neither does the Live Update. With Windows, my System Restore shows up blank. Just like in the following link:

http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/73438.html

The difference is that the Norton program I have was from the box, not downloaded off of the Net.

Now, my Outlook express is gone, Microsoft word was missing important files, and the scripting on my Internet Explorer 6 is messed up. Haven't tried the solutions in the above post as I am at work right now. I wanted to get a few more opinions. I have a lot of music software on my computer that takes forever to configure so I really don't want to have to reinstall everything.

Running an upgrade from 98 to xp is not the greatest of things to do the basis of the 2 operating systems is so different that it really doesnt makes sense to upgrade. When you installed you progs originally they were configured to run on 98 the installs and components installed change with xp . Yes you would expect ms to get things right but we all know they dont.

I would reccomend you save as much of your data as you can then format you drive and make a fresh install of xp it will be worth it in the long run honest

PS if you do decide to format, format your hard drive to the NTSC format it is more secure than FAT32 to begin with and is the native file format for xp

I concur with MRT. Sorry.

Well, maybe try this as a last resort and unlikely fix.... if you told the upgrade so save your original files so that you can uninstal XP and revert back to Win98, try that and see if that goes ok. If it does, you can try the upgrade again, but this time, UNINSTALL NORTON SYSTEM WORKS, then try the upgrade again. And if you want my opinion, Norton System works is very flaky and more apt to cause problems than solve, especially Norton Internet Security. The only two Norton/Symantec products that seem consistently solid are PC Anywhere and Norton Antivirus. All the other stuff is like I said, too flaky.

Instead of Norton System Works, what does everyone suggest. Thanks again.
