Subject: System Restore not availableOS: Windows XP ProCPU/Ram: 512mbModel/Manufacturer: AMD Athlon 1200 |
Comment: Starting about two months ago, the System Restore feature is not visible (tab missing) or when clicked via Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Restore it does nothing and I cant see the existing points. The Restore service is running but regardless how I tried to run it, it just doesnt. Any similar experience or suggestions? ZoneAlarm, BitDefender, Spyware Doctor, AVG Free edition

Reply: (edit)Of course, I Googled the problem over and over and found several methods. The most common is to click on the Restore Tab... but there is no Restore Tab. A few of the "solutions" involved editing the Registry, but a number of them have conflicts with each other... hard to select the proper one. Another suggest to delete the "policy" file and I could not find if that is safe. I was hoping for a new suggestion, but I will continue to wait for a new one. Reply: (edit)First tell us how did you determined that SR is running when you cannot access any of its feature? Do you have any recollection what happened two months ago that turned off the features? i_Xp/VistaUser

Reply: (edit)The reason I see System Restore is running is by going to msconfig, click on tab Services and find System Restore Service "Running". I do have Administrator rights. ZoneAlarm, BitDefender, Spyware Doctor, AVG Free edition

Reply: (edit)What happenned 2 months ago? That is very hard to identify. Nothing specifically that would raise a flag. I faithfully do the automatic Microsoft Update when they have patches, I run a heap of Antivirus programs that remove what they consider viruses or dangerous items. I do not believe that I ran any kind of Registry cleaner, although I cant precisely say if I did two months ago. I tend to fear those programs because I am not familiar enough with Registry entries to agree to deletes. I probably ran a Disk Cleanup and Defragmentation within the last two months. I wish I had a log of what went on, but I dont. ZoneAlarm, BitDefender, Spyware Doctor, AVG Free edition

Reply: (edit)There was/ is an issue with Automatic updates and performing a system repair. Possibly the sam issues arrear with system restore. Below is a link to the story and a possible fix for the other problem. Have you tried simply disabling system restore and rebooting, then enabling system restore? http://www.windowssecrets.com/2007/...

Reply: (edit)I had great hope for the process linked to item 278 and 289 above. I ran both and tested it but since it did not show any change in the behavior, I rebooted the system and went back. Again, System Restore service is running but the System Restore tab is not shown and if I use the System Restore in the System Tools it doesnt do anything. Oh well. Did I miss anything? Reply: (edit)Look into SFC/scannow. Just might restore the files involved. There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Reply: (edit)During January 2008 I decided to take the leap and purchased the HP Pavilion Elite that came with Vista Home Premium. Since then I have been in a learning curve. I find access to the Internet slower than with XP but I still have a lot to go in adjusting settings to speed it up. Before I gave the XP computer to a friend, I found the Restore tab came back. I consider the problem closed. Thanks for all the suggestions. ZoneAlarm, BitDefender, Scan with Spyware Doctor, AVG, SpyBot
