My System Restore no longer works and I cannot figure out why not.
It allows selection of a date and offers many of them, starts and acts like it is restoring whatever set point that I select and then after going through all of that, it comes up with a message saying that it was unable to restore the set point.
It used to work but has not operated now for several months.
Has anyone else run into this problem too?
Thanks

You can turn it on and off.
Hit the windows key+Pause or go to device manager and select system, Go to system restore tab and make sure turn off system restore is not checked.
Let us know if this works!

Stump
Thanks for responding. I did that and the box is not checked. The amount of space reserved is "maximum" but it still does not work.

I came across this on another forum. I had the same problem as you and it fixed it:
-----------------------
If you are running Windows XP Home and after going thru the System Restore process, a message stating "Cannot restore the computer to an earlier restore point, no changes have been made to your computer" pops up, try the procedure listed below to restore its functionality.
Right click [My Computer] [Properties] then click on System Restore tab.
Put a check in the box for Disable Restore on all drives.
Click apply, then Reboot your PC.
After the system reboots, navigate to the System Restore tab and turn it back on. Click apply.
Navigate to [System Tools] [Restore...] and choose [Create a Restore Point]
Provide a name for the new restore point.
Try and restore the new point just created. It should work properly.

OK Dude
Lets attack this
First go back and turn off system restore. Then go to disk cleanup and remove all temp files and bogus system restore files. Start/programs/access/system tools/disk cleanup.
After that restore system restore.
Now find your XP disk and put it in the tray.
Click on start/run and type in SFC /scannow.
Note the space between sfc and/. This will replace any lost files neccessary to your system. I'm logging off for the night, but if that don't work, post back because I will follow this to see if it works.
Also you can Email me if you want.

turn your s.r of then turn it on again that will usually fix it also do you have real one player on your computer if you do GET RID OF IT it corrupts system restore and deleats all your restore points in xp and it happens randomly so it makes it very hard to pinpoint
LET US KNOW HOW YOU WENT
I HAVE HAD MAJOR RESTORE PROBLEMS BEFORE AND AFTER A LOT OF HEADACHES THIS WAS THE CAUSE AND HAVNT HAD A PROBLEM IN 12MONTHS NOW GOOD LUCK

Re: Realone Player..
I've had this player for a while now and have used system restore a number of times so far with no problems whatsoever.. So I don't know what's going on with that but I guess it definately doesn't affect everyone..

Thanks to everyone that responded. I should have posted this a month or two ago.
I combined all of the suggestions and rebooted after every step. Then, made a new restore point to test it and it worked perfectly.
I appreciate all of you taking the time to respond and share your experience and expertise. Thanks again.
