I bought my computer a year ago, I had it custom built, I got a ATI AIW 9600XT video card and an Audigy 1 card. Just last week I finally bought 5.1 speakers, hooked it up and went to change the speaker settings from 2 to 5.1, it wouldn't let me, so i realised my sound card drivers were not installed, so I went to the website, started the installation but the blue screen came up and the comp restarted, I again tried to install, samething, so I gave up and tried to open my AIW tv, and error came up, so I restarted and tried again, samething, I knew it must have been the sound drivers, so I did a system restore back to before i installed the sound drivers, and tv worked fine. but I still wanted my 5.1 speakers to work, so i tried to install the drivers that came on the cd, blue screen came up again, restarted, then windows wouldn't start, so it restarted and I got the safe mode msg, tried to restart to the last known good configuration, and it just kept restarting at the windows startup screen, the only way I was able to get into windows was through safe mode, and I restored the comp back to the day before all this crap happened, and it restarted and loaded into windows great, but I noticed my little speaker icon didn't load, and I had no sound on anything, went to the sound options and i can't touch it, it's grey. So I tried to restore back to a few days before, and the comp kept restarting at the windows start up screen again, so I went into safe mode and undid the restore, and now I'm back to a working comp with no sound, and system restore won't work, it just keeps looping at win startup. I ran SFC and tried to restore again, but it just keeps looping. Does anyone know how to fix it so I can use system restore again in case I run into future problems, and also does anyone know how I can get my audio back, it's pretty boring watching the tv with no sound.

I've told people this many times before: Do not rely too heavily on XP restore... it is NOT a complete backup/restore system. There are certain folders that It does not backup and the system folder is one of them.

Get your problem straight, turn off system restore and invest in a REAL backup program.

Sadly isn't it that SR doesn't backup everything. HERE is a list of what SR does not monitor for backup and restore.

restart in safe mode and uninstall the sound card and drivers check add remove programmes for sound software and remove that too
you may need your mother board disk to restore your onboard sound then check your bios to see if your sound on board is enabled
you mibht have to disable it to get a pci sound card to work

Thanks. Does anyone know how I can fix System Restore? Even if it doesn't backup everything, I would still like it to work.
