system restore disappears

when I right click my my computer icon and check properties as soon as I click on the system restore tab the window just closes If I click on it from the start menu it says it's not available please restart your computer. I've searched the forums here and haven't found this problem. I ran ad aware did a full virus scan and repaired the xp files with sfc\scannow with no luck any ideas anyone?
