I have seen many many posts, both here and elsewhere, which suggest using System Restore to recover missing, lost or deleted personal files.

There is clearly a widely held misconception that System Restore will do this but it does not.

The operative word is SYSTEM and this is what it restores, nothing else.

In addition, the files type which are monitored by System Restore are listed HERE.

Also, the followings are not monitored by SR:

- Passwords in the SAM hive

- WPA settings (Windows authentication information is not restored)

Anything which alerts folks to System Restore's real function (and limitations) is to the good......
