Hi Everyone,
I just got off the phone with verizon as I could not get on the net, she told me my system resources is very low and should be about 80%. I don't know what to delete to get up to 80%, I was wondering if I can get some input from our tech support team at comp net,
thanking you again for your help,
frank

A followup on system resources,
the programs using the most is
enigma my browser -33,500k
explorer(do I need this) -24,440k
svchost -25,128k
motiveb -19,840k
vsmon -09,448k
mad -07,044k
dkservice (defrag) -06,392k
crss -05,220k
there are many small ones, but these are the biggest users of the system. Should the defrag and explorer programs be there to use up the resources. I never use the IE, but use enigma and firefox. The other I am not sure of,
frank

How about unclicking something in the Startup tab of msconfig. I don't know what you have running in the background.

Are you running Windows XP? Low system recources and a percentage is something I would expect to see from Windows 98, not Windows XP.

Stuart, I think what frank meant is that his XP resource is 42% free. Verizon told him he should have > 80% resource free.

If you're running defrag, end it.

Hello.

" Explorer " must run because it is the Windows XP itself.

" dkservice " does not need to run if you do not use " Set it and forget it " function of the Diskeeper.

Check your HDD free space and pagefile to see if they are of sufficient size.

Another thing I notice that is taking up space is
EVENT VIEWER logs. Go into EV then right click
each catagory, then click "Clear all events".

Also check all the files in
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
The Prefetch folder is quite large.
I have deleted all files there, even

It will rebuild itself over time.

Then do this to check for bad sectors on HDD:

Ignore what Verizon said, that person was thinking of Win9X.

System Resources was a problem in Win9X, but it is not in WinXP. XP automatically assigned more space for System Resources when it's needed.

Anyway, even in Win9X there is no problem with System Resources unless you completely run out.

Hi ham30,
They have a program that takes over your computer and could move the mouse and check everything on your computer. They were looking in the windows task manager, performance area and was looking at the processes which is now 39%. This is the reading they called system resources and said it should be around 80%. Could processes be considered system rescources?

Thank for your input,
frank

No Frank, they are two different things.

System Resources is a section of memory set aside to heep pointers and info about running programs.

Processes are the actual programs themselves.

Just want to make sure you were talking to Verizon, and not some scammer. Did you call them or vice versa? I gather it was the former. Did you succeed in getting connected? Is this DSL?

Hello Salgolf,
I called them because I could not get on the net. They were walking through their analysis, also the dsl was as fast as a 56k modem. I have had that problem, where the so-called dsl speed is not there and loading a webpage is oh so slow. I also have trouble finding a server. The verizon webpage loads and then the computer can't find a server. I have had a two fold problem, slow dsl and trouble finding a server.

Frank--
There was a saying, back when DSL was getting started, that "you have to live within 3 miles of the telephone company's switching equipment in order to get the DSL speed".

You could search the web for
troubleshooting DSL

Chuck2, thank you for your follow-up. I do live within 3 miles of their switching station, I assume the dsl eqipment is there-not sure. I have the computer a distance away from the phone connection and am using a 50 foot connection cable and a splitter for the telephone. I don't know if this hinders perfect connection to the phone company. I can't see why a splitter could be a problem, but maybe the long connecting cable could cause line loss, though I have to say, the phone is perfect sounding.
thanks for your help,
frank
