System recovery won't work

July 12, 2011 at 00:12:10
Specs: Windows XP, intel Core 2 dou
I attempted to do a system restore on my laptop, but the the screen to help me continue the restore won't come up and won't allow me to access the normal computer screen either. After the HP logo a white bar appears at the bottom of the screen appears saying windows loading files. Then the little green loading bar comes up which then goes to gray screen. The screen isn't solid gray it looks sort of like a curtain type background.

Before all this happened laptop wouldn't remain on for more than a few minutes without it being plugged in, even if the battery was fully charged. Thank you if you can provide any help

... how old is the battery?

... if you remove the battery and startup just off the mains adapter does it stay turned on?

... when you enter the bios does it stay turned on?
Demonstrative exspelling
... there is logic to this madness!
the element of surprise Grrrrrrrr
