System Idle Process... lot of CPU

Lately my computer has been running slowly, and the internet goes down a lot for no apparent reason. It usually only lasts for about 5-10 mins of downtime. Anyways, I thought that maybe the reason that my computer is running so slow is the high CPU usage of my "System Idle Process"?

It's taking 80-90 CPU, using up to 40% of my CPU (according to the chart...). Is there any way to stop this from taking so much CPU? Or is there a way to find out why my PC has slowed down?

Thanks in advance.

Normal when the brain is doing nothing.

Spyware info.from Microsoft

Maybe check for, and remove SpyWare.
Here
you will find links for detection and removal software.

Here is another that is at most computer stores,
including Office Depot, Office Max:
Spyware X-terminator

Also, be sure to update any software online
after installation, and every 1-2 weeks.

Hmm, yeah. I use AdAware just about every day, and I run Norton Antivirus a lot. Not sure what else it could be...

It is normal. When your computer is doing nothing, System Idle Process will be at 99%. This shows the percentage of CPU available for use.

I have seen here that just AdAware is not enough. Never have used it. Seems like it only gets rid of popups. You may need something to get rid of Trojans, Keyloggers, and others.

I have the same problem with windows XP. Just upgraded from 2000 to XP and ever since then, it's been a huge problem and is driving me crazy. Everything lags when "system idle process" is using large parts of the memory. Listening to music is frustrating cause it is choppy about every 10 minutes for a couple of minutes. I've tried everything and can't figure it out.

System Idle Process isn't what's slowing you down. The only thing SIP does is run a thread to see how much of your computer is sitting idle. It's a system process that can't be terminated for that reason. It will not cause computers to run slow. I think the best explanation I have ever heard was in this thread, about whatever percentage it shows being how much of your computer is free to use; that's pretty accurate, to a degree. ;)
If you check for spyware and viruses, and still nothing helps, then get your hardware checked out, or reinstall Windows.

As well meaning as some of your respondents are, this has nothing to do with spyware, viruses, trojans or worms. It is completely normal and benign.

When I dug a little deeper, I found the incontrovertible answer at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263201

This is a link to a page on the Microsoft Support Center which describes all of those mysterious processes that show up with Task Manager. As you can see on that page, some of the folks who answered your question were absolutely right.

Unlike other processes, the value of "System Idle Process" shows how much CPU time is NOT being used, not how much IS being used by that process.

Check out the Microsoft link - lots of good info there! Good luck!!

I would highly recommend priority setting software, such as Priority Master 2005.

Basically, this allows you to tell the CPU what programs you want the fastest response from, and those that are best given the leftovers.

I use it to assign higher priorities to programs that are time critical, such as CD burning, music listening, surfing, etc.

Also helpful is using the program to assign a lower priority to CPU hogs.

Google for it-you'll be glad you did.
