when i boot the computer it boots fine and starts up running fine, but when i want to explor the hard drive or the internet it hangs, i have checked in task manager and found that the explorer.exe starts using up all the resources on the machine when i do this, the same problem persists in safe mode, i have already tried doing a repair install on the machine but this had no effect and i cant really do anything else as i cant load up any other programs onto the machine via a memory stick as i cannot access it, i have already run an external virus scan on the drive and found no viruses on the drive, could you please help me?? i dont know what to do from here.

Have you emptied out your temporary internet files? If you don't do so regularly the system becomes bloated. ( I set mine to empty on closure of the browser)

i cant access the temp file, as i said, when i try to use windows explorer in any way the system hangs, all i can access is the word documents and the short cut to avg on my desktop. my documents, my computer, recycle bin, internet explorer all cause my computer to hang when i access them, i have tried restarting the explorer.exe process but when i try acess any of these programs the system hangs once more

Boot into safe mode, then dump all the garbage files. Install CCleaner & use it regularly.

lol, wish i could, but the problem persists even into safe mode, like i said, i have tried all the normal avenues but cant get it sorted, i was hoping someone would come up with a wierd and wonderful cure for me

You don't need to connect to the internet to delete your cookies.
Go to Control panel> internet options and delete cookies and files.
After that set the amount of space to use for temp files as low as it will go and set the days to keep files lower than the default 30 days. I keep mine at 1 day.
Then get CCleaner as jam suggested and use daily.

umm... what part of cant use explorer do you not understand, i cant get TO the control panel, i see the option on the start menu but that is all i can do i can click on it but the system hangs....and i cant go access internet explorer iether, task manager tells me that explorer.exe is using all my resources, im using a different computer to try trouble shoot this problem.

Check out a thing called UBCD4WIN
Use it to create a bootable CD or DVD
Boot your problem machine with that and you will find a lot of troubleshooting tools available including a couple of explorers, internet access, antivirus/spyware tools etc.
They all load up in ramdrive so you can access and check your harddrive without having to boot your native operating system.
