system gets REAL slow sometimes!

hello. every so often, my (athlon 1800xp, winxp, 512 mb) system slows down to a crawl, sometimes forcing me to reboot because ctrl/alt/delete and forcing programs to close won't work. this seems to be random. any ideas? it happened last when i tried to copy and paste a program from one folder to another. it happened earlier today when i right clicked mp3 music files to convert to waves. this also seems to happen when i try to start a program, although it's uncommon.

This could be a lot of things ... Your CPU is overheating, poor fan cooling. You may be running too many programs at once. Could be you have not enough memory for all the programs you are running. It could be that you need to defrag the hard drive. Could be the hard drive is going bad. Hope I didn't scare you :)

My guess would be that your virus scanner is running a full drive scan in the background, which can slow you down to a crawl especially if you have a lot of other programs loaded into memory. AntiVirus programs are notorious for slowing down computers for other reasons too... but they're a necessary evil.
