System freezes before login

Greets. My laptop can get only as far as the Windows XP login screen. Sometimes I am able to get as far as the desktop but again it gets no further (but doesn't load all the icons in the tray) It seems like it it is still functioning in that it does not crash, more that it takes so long to do anything that it looks like a crash. Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome!

Did you try last known good config or safe mode from the menu on F8?

Not yet - I have to try this when I get back from work this evening, but even after I have started it in Safe Mode (which I think I know how to do, using f8) I do not know what the steps should be once it has started in safe mode...

If it starts in safe mode, that means the one of the programs in normal startup is causing the conflict. Run msconfig and disable some of the things there. Reboot and see what happens.
