I have same problem. I installed software from work, ever since I've had the same problem. I'll keep an eye out here for the resolution. Good lock.

The system32 folder will pop up on boot if there is an INVALID entry in the RUN at STARTUP part of the registry. All entries must have some valid key. One of the enties has been corrupted. This can happen after a piece of software has been deleted. Check the following place in the registry.. NOTE.. going into the registry is a DANGEROUS task!! To enter the registry, click START and RUN,, then type in REGEDT32 and OK.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In there all the entries must have a direct path to a program. The usual cause is an entry that has a space or other character between QUOTES.. like " ".
This is INVALID, and XP does not know what to do with it. If you can, delete that entry key and exit the registry. This will cure your System32 popping up. Make a note of the NAME that is for this entry, it will give you the clue as to what caused it. HP scanners of old are a favourite cause (especially the SCSI variety)...:o)

Thanks.. But theres only a few that have the quotes.. and the ones that do.. I dont see any invalid key.. unless "_" is..

Also.. I have one that goes.. "C:\.....\xxxx.exe \L xxxx"

Is that bad?

The one with the "_" is invalid. Delete that one for a start. What is the NAME for this particular entry?
My main concern however is the other entry you mention. That looks suspiciouly like the W32.BUGBEAR virus. The xxxx.exe is randomly generated by this virus. Use the following link to obtain the BUGBEAR removal tool:-

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear.b@mm.removal.tool.html

Make sure you read all the info on that link too.

You may want to download the standalone virus checker called STINGER from Mcafee too. It checks for BugBear and others. The link for this is:-

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

That may clear any viruses you have too. If it appears to STOP, then you may have to disable the SYSTEM RESTORE and then run the stinger again. Once your PC is clean, you can enable SYSTEM RESTORE again, and that will create a new restore point for you.

Let me know how you get on...:o)
