we have brought a volume licenced version of XP to upgrade 7 PCs to XP Pro even though they are upgrades we have been sent a full version of XP is there anyway to use Sysprep or nlite to automate the upgrade without doing a complete format of machine
You can upgrade from the pro cd by starting it in windows and select upgrade.

For 7 computers it is almost a waste of time to make a target system, test it, sysprep it and deploy it. Might just as well do a full clean install for various reasons after you do a full backup/dxml image of each one. Then deploy the systems along with the new users/groups in ad then connect. Get the user data from backups if needed or offer it on server. I would protect the server and just trash any old data if you can. Start clean.
