Comment:

I'm trying to create an XP image using Norton Ghost. I get everything ready, then run sysprep.

[using: sysprep -mini -quiet -reseal]

Everything runs fine, but then when I restart a freshly imaged machine (with exactly the same hardware - IBM ThinkPad X23) it redetects the network card, and wants to install the drivers for it.

My understanding is that it should not need to redetect ANY hardware, given that the machines are identical hardware wise (it even does it when I reboot the source X23).

Any ideas?

It might be redetecting the network card because every network card has a unique MAC address.
