OS: XP home
CPU/Ram: 1.8 512
Comment:

When I go to Start>Run>Sysedit a window pops up and reads, C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT.
The system is not suitable for running
MS-Dos and Microsoft Windows applications.
Choose Close to terminate the application.

Becuase of that I can't get to AUTOEXEC.BAT in the SYSEDIT.
Is there some way to get rid of the C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT

It is Win XP home edition

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Autoexec.bat is a DOS system file. There is no DOS in Windows XP.

autoexec.bat isn't just a DOS file, you will have one on the root of C with Windows 2000 and XP as well. Mostly for old legacy devices that need to have it there.

But out of curiosity, what are you trying to do in sysedit.

Kurt,
I just checked 3 different Windows XP machines and none of them had autoexec.bat.

Until you get your sysedit problem fixed, you can open autoexec.bat and the other system files with Notepad. If you're tempted to use Wordpad or any other word processing program, do not do it. Use only Notepad.

My XP sytems have autoexe.bat.

Sci-Guy make sure you have the options set to view system and hidden files. I've just checked a couple of XP and Win2K systems and they all had autoexec.bat files on the root of C.

Thanks for your replies.

most of all I like to stop that pop up window
It pops up when I sart or reboot the computer
It also pops up when I try to install certain programs like EasyCleaner and AdGaurd.
If possible I like to get in to Autoexec.bat
like in Win98se. To type in some commands to clean out the Cookies file on startup.
As I am a newbee to WIN XP. Could someone please tell me how to get to it in detail?

Tanks jdg

With regards to the autoexec.nt error, you should have a spare copy of it in windows\repair. Copy and paste it into windows\system32. You can also check this KB article if you're still having trouble.

The file likely went missing because of malware , so you may want to do some adware/spyware/virus scans.

What is your popup window? It's not Windows Messenger is it? You can uninstall that from Control Panel.

Most of what you could access from sysedit.exe is also available by running msconfig.exe

Hi HiJinx
I did the copy and paste as you suggested and it is all working like it should.
Yes I "did" have some uninvited guests on the computer.
Thank you all for your advice.
