Comment:

I have a problem with Norton AV 2003 it won't live update it comes up with the error LU1814. Also I cannot get the symantec home page to come up in Internet Explorer I get the MSN search page which lists Symantec.com when I click on that I get the page cannot be displayed.
In Firefox I get The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.symantec.com.

I have ran AVG, Spybot & Adaware and removed all that they found but still the same problem.

I'm running WinXP and using a dial up connection.

I had the same problem. You have to run a update for Live-Update. The Symantec site is up and well. Once you eventually get there, go to the Downloads page, click on product updates and from select Live Update from the list. The file name is lusetup.exe dated December 15, 2004. Good Luck.

also check your HOSTS file it could be blocking access to symantec.com and that is why you can't hit the site...

one of their suggestions is go to
https://www-secure.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/index.jsp?ref=consumertsus

to see the entire page use this shortcut

Hosts file entries prevent LiveUpdate from connecting
Some worms and Trojans, such as those in the Gaobot family, make changes to the Windows Hosts file. The following are typical entries:
127.0.0.1 www.symantec.com
127.0.0.1 securityresponse.symantec.com
127.0.0.1 symantec.com
127.0.0.1 liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com

All such entries should be removed.

The Settings.LiveUpdate file or the S32luhl1.dll file is corrupted
The Settings.LiveUpdate files or the S32luhl1.dll can become corrupted, resulting in this problem
The Settings.LiveUpdate files--some will begin with numbers such as 1.Settings.LiveUpdate--are usually found in \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Liveupdate.
The S32luhl1.dll file, if it exists--it will not be found on all systems--is in C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate. (This file's hidden attribute may also be set. Make sure Windows is set to display all files when looking for it.)

Ensure that Windows is set to show all files and file extensions, then:
Delete the Settings.LiveUpdate files
If you are not using a customized Hosts file--most users do not--delete the S32luhl1.dll file.

----------------------
WARNING: Do not delete the entire \Symantec\LiveUpdate folder or the Product.Catalog.LiveUpdate file. If you do this, you may have to reinstall all Symantec products for LiveUpdate to work properly.

This article was very helpful. There was only one thing though, I checked my "hosts" file and it looked normal. So I went through the entire series from the link above, all very interesting but none of it helped. So I went back to the hosts file because I know how easy it is to mess with someone by making a simple entry or two. That's when I noticed the scroll bar in the notepad window. The virus/bug entered about twenty or so blnk lines and added the entries at the bottom. They covered the bases too...
