Hello - what a great forum!

I foolishly installed Norton Systemworks 2006 (I know,I know) and my system is really messed up. I'm thinking of doing a total reinstallation of everything but since that usually takes me days to get my system back to what it was I was hoping you could help?

When I installed Systemworks it locked up everything. I since then uninstalled and just have Norton AV 2005. No viruses found on 2005.

Biggest issue found so far is that I can not do a system restore...I know that the following is involved in this but don't know how it is involved:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CMD - the Windows Command Processor...I am almost certain that symantec messed this up for me.

How would I repair this? How can I completely get symantec out of my windows folders?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

I stopped using Symantic products about twelve months ago. They were more trouble than they were worth.

I would un-install Norton AV and get yourself a copy of AVG. It is free and does a good job. It stopped the Backdoor.Breplibot.I virus the other day for me. A rather nasty RootKit virus.

When you have done that run Regedit and do a search for Norton and Symantic and delete everything it finds with those names. You can delete the folders from your system.

Believe it or not Symantec actually makes a "remover" for when their piece of crap product(s) won't remove itself properly.

Have a look at the Website.

They need an un-installer to get rid the abundance of registry entries it creates.

I got into a situation that un-install it because the un-installer couldn't find it and I couldn't install it because the installer said it was already running.

I'd save future problems even if someone here can help get things back and dump Norton entirely by formatting.

I know you didn't want to hear this, but nobody does.

Recommend internet security using an external router with firewall and go with AVG unless you decide on something else for AV.

I used AVG once and found it hijacked my os and all but locked me out of even booting up, so I wouldn't recommed AVG either.

Never had a problem with AVG. If you got locked out of you PC it was most likely something else other than AVG.

BTW: Firewall do absolutely nothing for viruses, add-ware or spy-ware. However it will lessen the impact if you do get a virus infection.

Thanks for your replies - still working on the system restore (as per per's instructions -LOL thanks).

Does anyone know why CMD.exe would be affected by this install/partial uninstall? Seems like it is preventing my HP system restore. I tried going just the system restore (not through HP) and although it tried, it couldn't restore back to any point.

Try this link:-

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=bar_sch_nam&docid=2004093015165236&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

It will take you to Symantecs page and tell you all the s--- to remove that they can't with their badly compiled un-installer. With such a well known name you'd think their software would be up to scratch by now (Hmm).
How come all their products require extra software (hidden in the depths of their website) that should be, but isn't, on the install CD (or original bundle).

If this link does not help (or show) then enter the following in Google:-

norton systemworks 2006 uninstall

Then click on link "Removing your Norton Program using SymNRT"

This page explains all.
SymNRT can be dowloaded from this page too.

Personally I would use Zone Alarm free edition as Firewall and AVG free edition as Anti-virus. Have been for years with no probs and GREAT security

Hope this helps. Pls let us all know.
