Comment:

here is the deal, I have 2 hard drives, one is an IDE with XP installed on it and the other is a SATA with no OS on it at the moment.

I know that it is posible to install Linux or Unix on my other hard drive, but I am rather new to Unix and Linux and was wondering which distribution to get.

Stated that Linux is a x86 (Intel/AMD) based Unix environment, a simple and complete distribution may be Ubuntu Linux

I'm dual booting XP with Ubuntu on a laptop, and I've got to say, you won't find an easier Linux distro to get started with.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

There are many different flavors of both UNIX and Linux and which to use will depend on who you ask.

I'm using Redhat here at home myself on one of my other PC's and also have a copy of CentOS. Both are fairly "easy" to use (easy being subjective) and install. Since most Linux distro's come with GUI's (not all UNIX do) you might want to just take a look around at several different ones before deciding on one.

There's nothing to stop you from downloading several distro's and giving each a try in turn until you find one you like.

I'm not sure I understand why you asked this question in the XP forum rather than the 'x forum, but I do like Suse.
