First connect the notebook to TV thru S-video or composite video cable. Turn the TV set on and adjust TV to output the S-video or composite video connection channel. Turn on your notebook. Your notebook should recognize TV and output to both built-in flat panel and TV. If not, then open up Display Properties in Control Panel.

Click Advanced... tab.

Browse over the various tabs there.

If you have the correct drivers for your Display Adapter, then you will see outputs to both TV, External Monitor, and Built-in Flat Panel. Not all of them may be present for your Display Adapter.

On the TV section, you will see a power button similar to the one on an actual TV set.

Click it. While you are there, adjust the TV output format, etc. if necessary.

By the way, your notebook should have key combinations to output to built-in flat panel or to external monitor or to TV, such as key Fn and key F3. Please check your notebook documentation.

Please also note, if you try to watch a DVD movie over TV (if you have a DVD-ROM drive, of course), you can only watch a DVD on one device, either built-in flat panel or TV, not on both. But you can see desktop on both flat panel and TV.

Hope the above helps.

Regards

thanks suat cini

i couldn't find any of the options you mentioned in the monitor advanced settings which confirmed to me that it was a driver problem

i had working driver for my sis 650 chipset but not enough to get all the options i should have

a visit to the sis website downloads section showed 1 download of video drivers for xp to much bigger than the others

i tried that and found it was the sis utility tray program. it provided all the options you mentioned and allowed me to select "mirror" so i can have tv output with the s-video cable and the lcd screen

so far i haven't been able to switch between and laptop with the func. and f4 keys and get no sound through the s-video cable but i have made a good start and will continue working on the problems

thanks again
