i get svchost.exe dialog box popping up when i start my xp PC. Is that normal or if not how to get rid of it. Any help would be appreciated, cheers in advance.
simon

What does the dialog box say?
Is this a firewall asking for permission?
If it is, allow it as scvhost is an important part of Windows networking.
Stuart

It shows 2 error messages simultaneously on start uperror 1.
svchost.exe - application error
the instruction at "0x00ab6f9a" referenced memory at "0x00000000" the memory could not be "written".
Click OK to terminate the program
click cancle to debug the program
Error 2.Data execution prevention
name: generic host process for win32 services.

I am getting this identical message (same address -- 0x0x00ab6f9a). I am running on XP-Pro machine. I believe the error message started about when XP service pack 2 update was installed.
The message occurs every time I boot the machine. Also recurs sporadically after I'm up and running.
I have not found a solution. If anyone has a solution, or has any info at all, I'd be grateful for it.

I've got the same problem. Two error messages simultaneously at boot, and they reappear everytime I close the messages and report the error to Microsoft.

Same application error for me, only another address. (WinXP Pro EN.) This happened after installing SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, but I'm not sure if this was actually the cause.
It could be a software version conflict, but of course also a trojan or something like that.If one of us has any news, let's post ok?
Wouter.

I have precisely the same message in the same location.
You can work around it by turning off Data Execution Prevention for Generic Host Processes for Win32 (which is what svchost.exe apparently is...) in Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Data Execution Prevention. However the error still seems to get written to the Event Viewer and I assume the problem is merely ignored as opposed to solved, hardly optimal.
There must be a solution for this!!

Hello,
I also have this similar problem.
I have scan my computer for viruses with Norton Security 2005 and stringer (No virus found).
I installed some windows xp patches
I ran ad-aware and adaware spy
I ran the symantec worm check program.
Still I get the same problem with the two error message mentionned at the start
Does anyone have a solution?

I've had all those problems and uninstalled XP service 2 and all went back to normal.
At first, I blamed norton, but tried the uninstall after several days troubleshooting things.
