Antivirus is only one string in what should be a comprehensive armory of security tools.
I also use Spybot Search & Destroy ( It has an immunize function) as well as Windows Defender and both hardware & software firewalls.

Your biggest risk is the person using the PC. Bad surfing habits, File sharing and poor email filtering will expose you to threats that antivirus alone is not equipped to handle.

I would doubt that AVG has anything to do with your file corruption issues. More likely, your files were already infected and AVG is just doing it's job trying to quarantine the infected files.

I suggest you visit trend micro and get an online scan done as a first step. Try to identify what infection/s you have and look for specific removal instructions.

There are any number of supposedly "Complete" security suites available. Personally, I would steer clear of Norton ( Symantec ) Last time I used any of their products they were a bit of a resource hog and were very difficult to uninstall.

I am using Avast, and its really good. It has saved me many times.
I used Norton for many years, but then it didnt save my PC from virus. Also tried NOD32, didnt save again. The virus kept entering.
I used AVG, its good, but latest version is not so good. Avira is fine, but has update problems. I am now with Avast, and quite happy with it.

If you want to go for paid ones, Kaspersky and McAfee are good.

And when you run an anti-virus/malware scan... temporarily disable the System Restore function... Once "clean" - re-enable it...

I favour Avast (anti-virus) over the usually recommended others; does what it says, and the freebie version is fine...

SpyBot S&D, and AdAware, and the M$ Windows Defender are the other (usual) recommended utils...; and all available as freebies... No need to spend pennies...

I prefer avast, superantispyware and threatfire. Threatfire has to learn your progs and can be annoying at first but quickly settles down. Kind of reminds me of the old guard dog prog without its issues. Tweaknow is a simple (don't change default settings) regcleaner. I do agree however that it seems some of your progs are infected! I would (1) turn off sys restore for now. Uninstall all the suspected infected progs. 2 d/l avast (on another clean machine) d/l superantispyware, threatfire and tweaknow and burn all 4 to a cd. Install avast first and let it do a boot scan (it will ask) then install superantispyware and run a scan. Last but not not least install tweaknow run it and let it fix the default. Now turn sys restore back on and create a clean restore point. Install threatfire now (remember it has some learning to do). Then go get "clean" versions of the progs you uninstalled. G/l

on the road again!!

Google antivirus reviews. Take a close look at Kaspersky. You can download it and try it free for 30 days.

Yes kasp and eset are 2 of the best paid a/v's out there but I've been using avast for more than 8 yrs and always come up clean (wether I run the usual online scans or install another a/v to try it). And I deliberatly run thru some of the worst areas of the net to "test" myself and my security. Again eset and kasp are good. I just know what works for me when I clean up somebodies rig "lots of them lately!" Lol g/l

on the road again!!
