Yesterday all of a sudden my computer started slowing down more and more and now I can barely do anything. I can't even have a yahoo instant message conversation with out it freezing up for a minute to send or recieve a message. I ran virus programs, defrag, disk cleanup, everything. I don't know what it is. When I ctrl alt del it says that I'm barely using any cpu but the paging file is really high. I boosted my virtual memory to 700 and nothing helps at all. Any suggestions?

Get more RAM. 128mb is barely enough to run XP on its own, let alone whatever other programs you are trying to run.

Also...you say this is a sudden thing...what have you done between the time when it was working well and started to slow down. Have you installed any new software? Have you changed any settings?

You can also try doing a system restore to a date when the computer was working well. That might fix it.

Good luck!

Sounds like what happened to me on my old system. It was a P3 1Ghz and was pretty speedy until one day it started being really slow, and from that day on it was always really slow. Turned out that my CPU fan was barely moving because there was so much dust and grime on my heatsink. I cleaned it off but it didn't help much, my CPU was still overheating so I had to buy a new heatsink/fan. I would search for and download something like Sisoft Sandra 2002 or 2003 and it has a CPU info section that tells your CPU/mobo temp to see if maybe your problem is the CPU overheating.

couple of questions... first.. make sure system is not overheating.. second.. go to this link http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=VXBWDJZDLQLVDKDNVRQ

that is a virus checker from symantec. It will tell you if you have a virus. the symptoms you are describing are exactly what the Kernal32 virus and all of its variants do. if no virus.. try...

3: delete all the files in your c:\windows\temp folder and manually delete all the files in your temp internet files. There are a couple of places they are stored in.. one is under c:\window\temp internet files and/or C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator(or your user name)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.

if the temp files folder is full.. sys will drag down to a crawl. Dont trust system cleanup to delete all these files. I have found it is more effecient if you do it manually. Try deleting all the cookies too.. could be a trojan in there somewhere...

good luck.... scootr
